How Does Earthquake Insurance Work?
As its name implies, earthquake insurance provides financial protection for homes and businesses when they are damaged by an earthquake.
Most often, earthquake insurance is sold as an addition to homeowners and dwelling policies. And if you rent your home, then it is possible for you to purchase earthquake insurance as an addition to your existing renters’ insurance.
An earthquake insurance policy will pay for costly structural repairs that are required after an earthquake, including damage caused by land movement or tremors. It may also cover the cost of additional living expenses incurred while your home is being repaired or rebuilt, as well as cover certain types of personal property that are destroyed.
Note that earthquake insurance is different from traditional homeowners’ insurance in that it focuses exclusively on earthquakes.
